Factors Affecting the Lifespan of Wear Parts

The biggest enemy of buckets, scoops, dump beds, and similar equipment used in construction machinery is wear. However, what we call wear does not consist of a single cause. Generally, two main factors stand out: impact and abrasion.

Most businesses treat these two factors as the same thing. However, there are serious differences between them, and without proper analysis, the wrong material selection becomes inevitable. This directly shortens equipment life and increases costs.

So which is more effective? Impact or abrasion?
The answer is actually a little different than you think…


What Is Wear and Why Does It Occur?

Wear is the surface loss of a material over time. In construction machinery, this situation arises from:

  • Contact with materials such as soil, sand, and stone
  • Friction during loading and unloading
  • Impact of hard parts (impact)

The Right Solution: Balanced Material Selection

The best performance is achieved by correctly establishing the balance of impact and abrasion.

For this:

  • Site analysis should be done
  • The material type should be determined
  • The appropriate steel grade should be selected
  • If necessary, different materials should be used in different regions

  • The mouth of the bucket → high impact resistance
  • The floor section → high abrasion resistance

This approach significantly extends equipment life.
